Summary: Durable little turtle
Comment: I've had this phone nearly two years. The phone is solid as a rock. Perfect for people who could care less about taking photos and playing games (although you can play games if you want with this phone). Small and sleek enough to fit in my front pocket of my jeans and still forget that it's there (convenient for men who don't carry all their junk in a purse and are aware of how ridiculous guys with belt clips look). people are amazed at how small it is.

downsides: battery life noticeably diminishes after 4-6 months (don't overcharge and you'll be fine). display only has 3 battery bars, so it's hard to determine how much usage is left once you get down to one bar. just discovered that they have a higher capacity battery (may order it instead of getting a new phone). i always have the ring set to high and it's barely audible in a pocket or bag (impossible to hear in a bar even if it's in your hand). has a little noise when someone leaves a voicemail even if ringer is turned off (annoying for library use). i also usually have the sound set to high unless i'm sitting in a quiet room, otherwise difficult to hear people.

regardless, i'd buy it again without thinking.

Summary: I second the "poor sound quality" review
Comment: I have had this problem as well...the sound is very muffled. I have to turn the volume way up, which is annoying, and I still have trouble understanding people. I am looking for another cell now.

Summary: It's perfect if you want just the basics.
Comment: This was a pretty nice phone while it lasted. I had to trade up to a Motorola PEBL just because my x475 was getting annoying. Some of the reviews with the muffled speech I had never a problem with. But, you just can't customize it like you should be able to.

And that's probably why they discontinued it before it's time. There has been barely any support for it. It took a long time for anyone to really make any games, good ringtones or wallpapers for this model. But, a couple months later after they started to come out, they discontinue the phone and the support for it was done with. T-Mobile won't even renew a contract with this model.

The upside that I've read in reviews is that yes, you can drop it and it would still survive. That was a major plus for me since I'm kind've clumsy. I've dropped it a lot and it didn't break anything on it.

The con was the battery life. Wow. Did it suck! Recharging it virtually everyday was a big hassle and I didn't do much on my phone. About ten text messages and it's on the second bar of power already. The last bar lasted for a little longer than the rest but still, it had bad battery life. The fact that you couldn't turn it to a true silent mode (silent is vibrate) and couldn't turn off the blinking light (you could, but when you get a missed call or text message it blinked no matter what) didn't help the battery life. It's these options that would've helped.

Now, if Samsung designed a better battery and companies offered more support for it, it would've went far. But they didn't and that's why it failed in my opinion.

Summary: An Average Buy
Comment: I bought this phone on the T-mobile website for free(web-based discount) and only paid for the shipping and handling (February '06). Reading the product summary on the phone on the T-mobile website made it sound like this fantastic over the top phone. But to me, I wasted money and should have went with a camera phone and paid more and gotten better features and enjoyment with some other phone.

My Pros with the Samsung x475:
*color screen (for those who are tired of looking at black and white screens)

*comes with instant messaging (AOL/Yahoo)

*it's a flip phone

*can have the 'PIN' feature activated so when I turn the phone on I enter my pin to prevent anyone else using my phone

*can adjust the brightness of the backlight/outer display

*can receive text AND picture messaging

*can download wallpapers or save a saved photo on the phone as a wallpaper

*can have individual ringtones for each caller group

My cons with the Samsung x475:
*the highest setting for the volume isn't very loud

*not being alerted when I miss a call

*ringtone volume isn't too loud and can miss a call even with the phone in my pocket on the bus (or sometimes in my hand!)

*I can't save street/postal addresses in the phonebook

*Shorter battery life= constantly having to charge the phone!! With my Nokia phone I charged it about once a week! With this Samsung phone I have to charge it almost everyday! If I don't I will have low battery and my phone will shut off!And I barely use my phone!

*just to receive a picture message is complicated! The manual was no help and I had to figure it out myself! That was just too much frustration and time put into it! Now I know how no thanks to Samsung's x475's useless manual.

*there's no camera included!

*********The cons list can go on and on. But, this is all MY personal experience with the Samsung x475. I should have went with the motorola pebl or something with at least a camera, and better features. So it's really up to you though!

Summary: Poor Sound Quality
Comment: Pros: small and compact, color display, download ringtones.
Cons: poor sound quality. The sound is slightly muffled and it sounds like callers are not enunciating clearly. Callers say I sound the same way on the phone, and they have to say "what" a lot. Increasing the volume doesn't help. Every voicemail message I try to listen to on this phone has had at least a couple words I can't understand at all. I've tolerated this phone for a full year. I am getting a new phone specifically because of the poor sound. I use it for work and can't afford the lack of sound clarity. Also, I found the menus a little cumbersome. Checking voicemail, looking up a number in the phone book, and changing the ringer to vibrate all take several steps.

Editorial Reviews:

Get some serious style with the x475 from Samsung. True, this phone is billed as entry-level, but it has features like MMS messaging, instant messaging, and a vibrant, high-resolution color screen that put it a notch above other phones that are this affordable. With the x475, you'll even get wireless Web capabilities that will keep you in step with the latest mobile Internet technologies.

Design
Inside the x475's sleek clamshell you'll find a large, 128 x 160 color display with support for 65,000 colors. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 64 monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's also a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets.

Traditional text messaging, as well as picture and sound messaging are also supported by the phone. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the x475, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator with currency converter, a to-do list, a calendar and an alarm clock.
