Summary: Solid performer!
Comment: Got this back in Oct 2006 when it was bleeding edge (3 MP camera in the slimmest slider in the world). Even now, the phone stands out enough; true, Samsung makes a hundred slider phones that from afar look exactly like this but up close all of my friends know better. Simply because this phone is small and extremely light weight yet the rubberized body feels solid without any creaking or 'plasticness'. This feels expensive. Plays a host of audio files for your music, beautiful screen on which colorful wallpapers contrast with the jet black body, and quad-band GSM that makes life very easy for travelers like me. Battery life was great - 5 hrs with intensive use. My only cons for this are the camera having ridiculously slow speed so you better hold this thing still if you want good pics; the PC software is horrible at managing SMS messages, you cannot backup/copy-paste like other phones such as Nokia; and the phone doesn't accept 2GB microSD cards for 90% of firmwares. 9.0/10

Summary: IF ONLY IT CAME WITH THE GIRL !!
Comment: What can I say, smooth lines, typical Samsung cutting edge technology. Wonderful features, if only it came with the Girl it would be the best thing since slice bread. I wake up in the middle of the night just to play with it. Life is short, have some fun before you get old.

Summary: Good substitute for clamshell.
Comment: When my beloved Motorola clamshell flip phone broke, I needed an acceptable replacement immediately. I don't like the Razrs, and I needed a quad-band, so this looked to be the best option. I've had it about a month now, and have adjusted fairly well. The feel is similar to the clamshell - sturdy, and the sliding operation is like the flip feature I was accustomed to. The beautiful, large screen is the best part of this phone, but the rest works well too. Navigation is fairly easy. Overall, it is really nice. The only complaint I have is that the texting options make the process of sending a text message much more complicated than with my old phone, but I am adjusting.

Summary: Great phone, Great features with minor annoyances
Comment: Performance and features:
Navigation through the phone menus is very responsive. There's no lag when you scroll through your phone book. Internet browsing is much quicker with EDGE. The phone has superb reception and is very reliable (I haven't experienced one drop call). The 3 megapixel camera takes brilliant pictures when your hand is steady. It has a built in flash which doubles as a flashlight. One huge annoyance that another reviewer mentioned was the fact that the phone doesn't save directly to your memory card. After taking a picture you have to manually transfer the file to the card. The built in MP3 player is great and plays loud through the stereo hands-free earbuds.

Feel:
It fits real nice in your hand and slides open with ease. It's a little light however, so it doesn't feel solid in your hand.

Looks:
Samsung has the market on the "black-look" for electronics. The phone is beautiful and slim but it doesn't have the shock factor as my other slim Silver Motorola SLVR (based on friend's reactions to phone). If Samsung were to came out with a silver edition, hands down this would be the best looking phone in its class. In the dark you don't notice black phones so I wish the keypad lights were brighter with a better color than white. A nice eye catching blue light (like Motorola) or white w/ blue tint would have been nice.

Overall the phone has tons of great features you'd want from a small phone. Though its far from perfect, its still a great phone for the price.

Summary: Good size, good quality
Comment: I purchased this phone for the following reasons:

1. size
2. bluetooth
3. quad band

I use the cingular service and a plantronics 510 headset. No problems with either with this phone.

I was using a motorola razr before, and this phone is easier to use in features and especially menus.

Editorial Reviews:

12.9 Millimeters Thin You can never be too thin. Same with your phone. At only 12.9 millimeters, the Black Carbon is one of the thinnest, slimmest sliders in the world. 3.0 Megapixel Camera There are camera phones, and there are ultra camera phones. With a full 3.0 megapixels, auto focus, a macro option and PictBridge technology, the Black Carbon is definitely the latter. GSM Quad-band If you travel around the world, the Black Carbon would make the perfect travel companion. It's global GSM quad-band capabilities mean you won't miss a call, text message or sports score virtually anywhere you go. Music Player The Black Carbon is more than a just good-looking phone. It sounds good, too. It plays MP3 files and a variety of AAC files, and it pumps 'em through a digital power amp so you can enjoy every stereophonic note to its fullest. MicroSDTM Slot If the 60 MB internal memory of the Black Carbon isn't enough, you can load files onto a microSD card. The possibilities - and storage capabilities - are endless.
