Summary: I really like this phone
Comment: I've read the other reviews and I just don't understand what those people are talking about, because my phone is perfectly fine, its actually really good. I had a Rzor phone before and I really like it but I like this one better because I love how you can upload music from your computer to your phone, i like the sound quality and for those people who say that the phone is difficult to use, they only say that cause they dont understand how to use it!

Summary: Mmm...Chocolate!
Comment: I've owned this phone less than a month, so I can't speak as to any long term issues, but this is how I feel about the LG Chocolate VX8550 so far:

Pro:

Nice feature package

Con:

Quirky user interface

FEATURE PACKAGE

LG's stylish Chocolate (I got mine in the very pretty Blue Ice) comes nicely equipped with an mp3 player and digital camera with video capability, voice recorder and quality speakerphone as well as a crystal clear color display. My personal interest in the second generation Chocolate was the the integrated mp3 player functionality. I wanted to use it when I do my outdoor workouts and I don't like having to carry a bunch of separate devices. It fulfills this role very well. The battery stands up well to both extended periods of music playing as well as long telephone conversations. The audio quality during calls is also quite good with plenty of volume for taking calls in noisy environments using either the internal speaker or a Bluetooth headset. I wish they hadn't used a proprietary power/data connector versus the more common and practical mini-usb. It's not like I'm going to purchase the grossly overpriced OEM accessories from Verizon, so what's the point? Also, I don't like that Verizon disabled the ability to upload your own ringtones, instead trying to force you to purchase their ringtones at ridiculous prices. Fortunately, there is a free, public domain software program that addresses this issue if you're a bit techy.

USER INTERFACE: LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP

A number of the Chocolate's design features annoy me:

Scroll Wheel
It makes whizzing through menu items or song lists a breeze, but its touchiness (even with the speed set to 'slow' in the option menu) makes it imprecise for selecting specific items. Since the wheel has a click function allowing it to be used as D-pad, I just use that when I need more precision. Too bad LG didn't put a little bit of 'damping' into the scroll wheel so it's a bit less skittish.

Auto Lock
Some people report having problems with the four touch sensitive 'soft keys' on the face of the phone causing inadvertant menu selections/functions to occur, especially when on a call. I don't really hold the phone against my face when on a call, so I haven't experienced this problem myself. There is an option to control how sensitive the touch buttons are; I wonder if those having such problems have set this to 'low' like I have. That being said, I have occasionally had an inadvertant touch button activation but very rarely.

Actually, though, I would prefer that there was an option to disable the Auto Lock function so that I could control it manually when needed. I find it far more annoying to have to constantly unlock the phone whenever I want to use it. For example, it's possible to answer the phone without opening the slider by using the select button located in the center of the scroll wheel, but you must first unlock the phone using the slide switch or pressing the select button twice. Ending the call (again, when not taking the call using the slider) requires a minimum of three steps. This just seems inefficient to me for simply taking/ending a call.

Screen Navigation
While the actual menus and submenus are reasonably and logically arranged, there is no way to jump directly to the main screen without opening the slide and pressing the 'end' key on the keypad. Why not include a function where you can press and hold the 'clear' key to do the same thing?

Call Waiting
Once you take a second incoming call, the display does not show which call you are on or even that you *have* a second call on line. What's up with that?

SUMMARY

Overall, I really like this phone. None of my complaints are really more than just annoyances and to many might be considered nitpicking. I love the trendy design and having an mp3 player integrated into my wireless phone. Chocolate. Strange name, nice phone.

Summary: thumbs down
Comment: I got this phone with my 2 year renewal about a year ago. A month ago, verizon tried to charge me for a bunch of text messages. I called because I don't use that feature and they argued with me about it when I explained I had not received any text messages. When they finally listened to what I was saying, they forwarded me to to tech and discovered that the phone was texting itself! They disabled the text feature and sent me a replacement phone (which was a different color than my old one so the battery doesn't match) after making me drive 20 miles and sit in line for an hour at a verizon store. And now the new phone has no sound. I can only use it on speaker phone. I just got off the phone with tech and they said I have to buy a new phone for $50 as my warranty is up. Huh?! Do they really think I should spend $50 on a phone that only works for a month? I'll be digging out my old phone and ditch verizon when the contract is up. They have got to be kidding. And yes, the problems the other reviewer describes with the phone going in to speaker mode etc. while it is against your face is very inconvenient as well.

Summary: Frustrating interface
Comment: I bought this phone a month ago on the internet. I have never returned a phone, but I am about to return this one. The touch screen is activated when you open the phone, but once you dial, the screen is locked. That is a nice feature, however, as soon as you touch the number keys (to check your voicemail, for instance) the touch screen unlocks. Now, the touch screen is against your face and unlocked. I have put people on speaker unintentionally. (Then had trouble getting them back off of speaker!) I have also muted my phone so people can't hear me. I consider myself pretty technologically savvy, but the interface on this phone has got me so frustrated that I am planning on returning it and looking for a new phone. Additionally, a lot of people have said that they are hearing every other word I say. I'm not sure if that is a phone issue or a reception issue, but I never had this problem with my old phone. Do NOT buy this phone!!!

Editorial Reviews:

Slimmer, lighter and sweeter than ever, LG updates its Chocolate slider phone to the VX8550 with improvements including a new metal navigation wheel (which traces your finger's movement with a small light), vibrating touch keypad, and the ability to run the music player in the background while using the other features of the phone. But many of the much vaunted features of the original Chocolate remain: silky-smooth slider design support for V Cast Music, an integrated music/video player, a 1.3 megapixel camera/camcorder, stereo Bluetooth capabilities, and a microSD memory slot for up to 4 GB of storage.

The LG VX8550 Chocolate features advanced music playback features--including the ability to play in the background while accessing other phone features.
Verizon Service Options
With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, you'll enjoy fast access to the Internet and Verizon's multimedia services (additional charges applicable), with average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps and peak rates up to 2 Mbps. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.) The V Cast Music service enables you to download songs instantly to your phone, or purchase music through your PC and transfer the files to your phone. If purchased from your phone, you'll receive two copies of the song: a Windows Media Audio Pro Plus format at 64Kbps stereo is sent to your phone, and a Windows Media Audio 9 format at 160Kbps stereo is sent to your account in the V CAST Music online store for downloading to your PC. V Cast Music offers nearly 2 million songs, with more being added all the time.

With the V Cast Video service, you can stream or download video clips to your phone from a variety of news, entertainment, sports, and weather channels, including CNN, ABC News, E!, CBS Sports, The Weather Channel, and VH1.

Getting on the Internet is easy using Verizon's Mobile Web 2.0 package, which allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Verizon's Get It Now wireless download service is also fully compatible with this phone. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service.

With this GPS-enabled phone, you'll be able to access Verizon's VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps. And Verizon's Chaperone service lets you easily locate your loved ones from your Verizon Wireless phone or PC in real time. After defining a zone, such as an area designating a school or summer camp, you'll be sent an alert via text message when the Chaperone handset enters or leaves the zone.

Phone Features
The Chocolate features a seriously attractive open-faced design with an internal antenna and a vibrant 240 x 320 pixel, 262,000-color TFT/TFD display. A touch sensor click wheel, similar to iPod, and sliding design set the phone apart stylistically. Opening the slider reveals a numeric keypad, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera and LED flash, which are housed on the rear of the phone. The new navigation wheel with Trace Motion Light allows for easy navigation through phone functions, as well as quick and simple functionality while browsing music and videos. The touch keypad provides an improved feel for quicker input.

The phone's 1.3-megapixel digital camera features a flash, as well as 2x digital zoom, self-timer, night-mode functions, and brightness and white balance controls. Other features include an in-phone image editor (zoom, rotate, crop) and a mirror for self-portrait capability. The camera can also capture video clips--30 seconds for sending and up to 1 hour for saving to memory card--at a 176 x 144-pixel resolution. It's compatible with playing MP3, 3GP, and 3G2 video formats, and you can set a video as your screen's wallpaper (as long as it's under 5 MB in size).

A built-in music player with a dedicated music key for easy access, stereo speakers and an equalizer, MP3 and WMA playback, and the ability to hide the music player while still allowing the music to play on in the background. You can create and manage playlists right on the phone, as well as synchronize music between the Chocolate and your PC (using an optional USB cable and connecting with Windows Media Player 10 or higher). You can also take advantage of the Chocolate's Bluetooth wireless headset capability, allowing you to hook up a pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones.

The Chocolate boasts powerful calling functions, such as speaker independent voice dialing, which makes it easy to call contacts by simply saying their names. No prior voice training is required and you can even speak individual digits to the phone for quick dialing of numbers you know by heart. And because the Chocolate is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation. You can save up to 20 Bluetooth pairings, and it supports the following Bluetooth profiles: headset, hands-free, dial-up networking, advanced audio distribution, phone book access, basic printing, object push for vCard and vCalendar (accessories sold separately), file transfer, and basic imaging.

Nicely compact, it measures just 0.67 inches thin and weighs 3.24 ounces.
The Chocolate's internal memory can hold up to 1000 contacts for quick access to email addresses and phone numbers. Each contact can store up to five numbers and two email addresses. The phone lets you easily assign pictures as well as ringtones to your most common callers. In addition to vibrating alerts, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones, and a number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Verizon's Get It Now service.

The phone's support for multimedia messaging means that text, photos, video and audio can be sent with ease (Verizon messaging charges apply). When used in combination with the Chocolate's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send emails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your email, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the Chocolate including a voice memo recorder that can record calls, a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock. You can even set the alarm to wake you to your favorite music. Also included with the Chocolate is Verizon's VG Navigator software, which allows you to get real-time, turn-by-turn audible directions as you're driving.
